Digestible Balloon Therapy

Human Study

Video from 2005 of an early feasibility prototype of the PlenSat Digestible Balloon

Video shows the ingestible pill expanding to a digestible balloon in a patient’s stomach as recorded by an endoscopic camera. The digestible balloon was passed safely from the patient and no ill effects were seen from this study.

The early part of the video shows the transition of the camera through the esophagus into the patient’s stomach. The camera is maneuvered to view the capsule floating in gastric fluid. The continuing video shows the breakdown of the gelatin capsule, especially below the surface. The balloon is exposed to gastric acid and rehydrates from the dry state and expands. This capsule was an early design in a ‘pillow’ configuration as opposed to the current spherical balloon.
